ERIS Experts - Juha Hämäläinen

A huge diversity of country-specific traditions characterizes social work in terms of different ideas, professional standards and practices in Europe and worldwide. A historical perspective is essential for understanding the particular characteristics of different social work traditions. European social work can only be based on conceptualizations which contribute to the specific traditions, histories and theories of social work in individual countries.

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Juha Hämäläinen is one of ERIS’s experts on the history and theory of social work. His research has focused particularly on the history and theory of child welfare policy, and more generally on the history of social work concepts from a comparative point of view. He has also published on the concept and theory of social pedagogy and has examined the interconnections of social work and social policy, with a particular focus on historical aspects.
